Keep Left Unless Overtaking – A Simple Rule That Keeps Queensland Traffic Moving
Have you ever been driving on a highway and found yourself stuck behind a vehicle sitting in the right-hand lane with no one in front of them?
It happens every day across Queensland, but many drivers don't realise that keeping left isn't just good driving etiquette – it's the law.
When do you have to keep left?
On multi-lane roads with a speed limit of 90 km/h or higher, you must not drive in the right-hand lane unless you are:
- Overtaking another vehicle.
- Turning right or making a U-turn.
- Avoiding an obstruction.
- Driving in congested traffic.
- Using a lane where road signs require or permit you to be there.
The same rule also applies wherever a "Keep Left Unless Overtaking" sign is displayed, regardless of the speed limit. Queensland's road rules are designed to improve traffic flow and reduce unnecessary lane changes.
Why is this rule important?
Keeping the right-hand lane clear allows faster-moving traffic to overtake safely without weaving between lanes.
When drivers unnecessarily remain in the right lane, it can lead to:
- Increased driver frustration.
- More frequent lane changes.
- Reduced traffic flow.
- Greater risk of crashes caused by sudden manoeuvres.
Remember, the goal isn't to speed. The right lane is primarily for overtaking, not for cruising.
A common misconception
Many drivers believe that if they are travelling at the speed limit, they are entitled to stay in the right lane.
This is incorrect.
If the road is 90 km/h or above (or signed "Keep Left Unless Overtaking"), you should move back to the left once you have safely completed your overtaking manoeuvre unless one of the legal exceptions applies.
